I’m gonna take a wild guess and assume that you definitely do not want to be stressed out about money for the rest of your life.

But there’s good news:

It is easier than you think to change your negative thoughts about money.

You just gotta change your money mindset.

Consider these things when starting your journey to change your money mindset:

  1. Surround yourself with like-minded people
  2. Learn more about money
  3. Acknowledge your abundance
  4. Stop negative self-talk
  5. Seek guidance

1.  SURROUND YOURSELF WITH LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE

Energy is contagious.  Thoughts and beliefs are contagious.  And so aren’t actions.

Even negative energy, thoughts, beliefs, and actions.

If you surround yourself with people who constantly talk about being broke or who throw a pity party for themselves because they can’t afford this and that, you’re going to slowly start exhibiting these same negative beliefs.

Additionally, if you are hanging out with people who constantly spend money they do not have, you will likely begin this negative habit, too.

Conversely, if you begin surrounding yourself with people who are good at budgeting, thoughtful about spending, and understand the value of a dollar, you will be rewarded with like-minded thoughts and actions.

Ask yourself this:

Do I spend time with people who encourage poor spending habits and perpetuate negative money beliefs?

If your answer is yes, it is time to evaluate these relationships.  Try distancing yourself from these people, or if that isn’t possible, have a serious conversation about how their money habits affect you.

Anybody who is worth spending time with will understand your need to eliminate negative money talk and will encourage you to not spend money you do not have.

2.  LEARN MORE ABOUT MONEY

A big factor in being able to think positively about money is having an understanding of it.

If you don’t know how to budget, how to pay off debt, or how to save money, then chances are you’re going to struggle.  Which will, in turn, leave a bad taste in your mouth about money.

When we take the time to educate ourselves about money, though, we give ourselves the proper tools to be successful.

It is an unfortunate reality that many of us are not taught about money growing up, but are expected to succeed when thrown into the real world.

Then, when we struggle to make ends meet, we beat ourselves up about our self-worth and feel like we are not successful.

This is a tricky cycle to get out, but our modern world makes it a little bit easier.

With access to the internet, you have millions of resources (mostly free) to educate yourself about money.  You can find articles, blog posts, YouTube videos, Instagram influencers, and more who can teach you:

and so much more.

Ask yourself these questions:

What confuses me about money?  And, what research could I do to change this?

Once you discover the cause of your confusion and worry, you can begin taking action towards improving your relationship with money.

3.  ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR ABUNDANCE

Chances are, you’re living a life of abundance.

How do I know?

Because most of us have everything we need, and more, if only we took the time to look around and acknowledge this.

Do you have shelter over your head?  Food in your fridge?  A place to rest your head at night?

If so, then your basic needs as a human being are being met, and thus, you are abundant.

What about these things:

  • A tv to watch
  • A cell phone to communicate
  • A closet overflowing with clothes and shoes
  • A car to drive

You see, if you stop and take a look around, you will discover the abundance your life already has.

By doing this, you can slowly eliminate this notion that you do not have enough.  This will, in turn, help to change your relationship with money and your need to validate your worth through purchasing stuff you do not need.

Try not to focus on the number in your bank account but rather the fact that you can afford what you need.

So what if you can’t go out to dinner once a week.  That does not equate to abundance.

4.  STOP NEGATIVE SELF TALK

Negative self-talk is a vicious cycle that can only be broken once you discover the common things you tell yourself about money and stop it.

Ask yourself:

What are 3 thoughts that I have when people talk about money?

They could be things like,

  • “I don’t deserve a raise”
  • “I could never make that much money”
  • “I am always broke”

Once you uncover the negative thoughts you have about money, you can actively reverse these thoughts.

You do deserve a raise.  You can make that much money.  You don’t have to be broke.

Be mindful of how you talk to yourself.

Because:

Your thoughts will become reality.

5.  SEEK GUIDANCE

Sometimes our finances are too much for us to handle (and this is ok).

Maybe you’ve dug yourself into a hole of debt that you don’t know how to dig yourself out of.  Or, maybe you want to buy a house but don’t know how to save enough money for a down payment.

While surfing the internet is a helpful tool to learn about money, sometimes you need more guidance than what a blog post has to offer.

In this case, seek professional help from a financial advisor who can objectively look at your finances and guide you through the process of better budgeting, paying down debt, or saving a large sum of money.

If a financial advisor isn’t something that you can afford, seek guidance from elders who have a better grasp on this whole money management thing.

And, don’t feel embarrassed to ask for help.  Swallowing your pride and reaching out is far less painful than continuing to go into debt.

6.  RECOGNIZE POOR SPENDING HABITS (AND STOP THEM)

If you do not track your finances, it can be very difficult to recognize poor spending habits.

And, if you don’t recognize your poor spending habits, you can’t stop them.

The best way to discover where you overspend is to track your finances in a budget binder.

Tracking your spending will help you visualize your flow of money and will allow you to see, point-blank, where you overspend.

For instance, spending $5 a day on coffee doesn’t seem like much until you’ve totaled up your spending for the month and visualize that this equates to $150 a month.

Now, paying down your debt doesn’t seem so out of reach when you know you could reallocate your coffee money to additional debt payments.

Once you recognize your poor spending habits, you can stop them in their tracks.  And, once you stop overspending, your relationship with money will drastically improve.

HINT:  Invest in a yearly financial planner (also commonly referred to as a budget binder) to help you create and stick to a budget, pay off debt, and save more money.  The Budget Boss Binder by Who Says What includes every resource you need to track your finances all year long!

7.  CREATE FINANCIAL GOALS AND PLANS TO ACCOMPLISH THEM

If you have financial goals and plans to accomplish those goals, you’ll be less likely to have a negative relationship with money.

Ask yourself these questions:  Where do I want to be financially in 1 year?  And, what do I need to do to get myself there?

Once you have a plan you can be more mindful with your money and improve your relationship with money, too.

For example, let’s say you have a financial goal to be debt free in one years time.

After you’ve set this financial goal, you can create monthly, weekly, and daily action steps to accomplish this goal.

A financial planner, like the Budget Boss Binder, is a great resource to record financial goals and your plans to accomplish them.

For the above-mentioned goal of becoming debt free, for instance, you could use the debt repayment goals and roadmap worksheet as well as the monthly debt repayment trackers included in the Budget Boss Binder.

Writing down your financial goals and breaking down your action-steps makes it much easier to accomplish them.

8.  LEARN HOW TO USE THE LAW OF ATTRACTION

If you’ve never used it before, the Law Of Attraction might seem silly.

But, give it a try and I know you’ll be surprised (and thrilled) by the results.

Remember how earlier I mentioned that your thoughts become your reality?  The Law Of Attraction is a deeper delve into this concept.

Many of the money mindset tips already mentioned in this post, such as focusing on abundance and stopping negative self-talk, are concepts used in the Law Of Attraction (for money).

There are many resources available to learn more about how to use the Law Of Attraction to attract more money into your life, such as this beginners guide.

One of my favorite ways to use the Law Of Attraction (for money) in my everyday life is while I am meditating.  To do this, simply say 5-10 positive money affirmations either aloud or in your head while you meditate.

Positive money affirmations can be things like:

  • “I am ready to receive the money I deserve”
  • “Money is good”
  • “I am wealthy”
  • “There is no limit to how much money I can attract”
  • “Earning money comes easy to me”

As I said, this might sound silly or even a little hippy-dippy – that is until you start seeing results.

9.  USE CASH MORE OFTEN

In the digital world that we live in, carrying cash is a rarity.

From being paid through direct deposit and money sharing services like Venmo, our need for cash is decreasing every single day.

However, having cash on your person will do two things for your money mindset:

  1. Remind you of your abundance
  2. Help restrict your overspending

When you see actual money in your wallet or purse, you receive instant gratification and feelings of abundance and wealth.

And, when shopping, you are far less likely to overspend when using cash because you can physically see the monetary value as you count out bill after bill for your purchase.

Having cash on your person is also a great way to use the Law Of Attraction for money because of the connection you can by imagining having more and more in your hands.

To get started using cash more often, use the cash envelope system of budgeting, or simply withdraw part of your paycheck each week.

10.  FEEL GRATEFUL WHENEVER YOU SPEND MONEY

Does this sound like something you’d say: “I am so sick of paying bills!”

I know you’ve said this, because I have, too.

But, the harsh reality is that you will always be paying bills – until the day you die.

So, you have two choices:

a.) continue to feel stressed and annoyed every time you have to spend money, or

b.) feel grateful when you are paying bills or grocery shopping because, hey, you are blessed to be able to do so.

This bit of advice was something that completely changed the way I think about money and drastically improved my relationship with money, too.

Feeling grateful for your spending instead of annoyed is a small switch in your way of thinking, but one that leads to a tremendous improvement in your money mindset.

So, finally, ask yourself this next time you spend:  Do I feel grateful or annoyed by this expense?

If you feel grateful, great.  If you feel annoyed, it is time to take action and remove that expense from your life.

Having a negative relationship with money is not something that you have to live with forever.

Whether you are in a tough financial spot or are getting by just fine, improving your money mindset will only benefit you.
