3 Reasons Why You Should Switch WordPress Hosts + How To Do It

Do you ever feel like you’re not getting the best bang for your buck when it comes to your hosting company?

Me too.  And is why I made the (fantastic) decision to switch from Bluehost to TMDHosting during the early stages of my blog.

Now, there were three main reasons I felt I wasn’t getting the most from my hosting company – price, support, and speed.

Luckily, though, switching WordPress hosts is incredibly easy and 100% saved my website.

Some of the links in this post are “affiliate links.” This means if you click on the link and purchase the item, I will receive an affiliate commission.

If you feel like you’re being duped by your hosting company (like I was), it’s definitely time to evaluate what your host is lacking and switch to a WordPress host who checks all your boxes.

To decide if your current WordPress host is living up to expectations, let’s go over three things today:

1.  Pricing

2.  Customer + Technical Support

3.  Website Speed + Responsiveness

You see, before I switched from Bluehost to TMDHosting, I was constantly encountering issues with my website such as lagging and crashing pages.

And, long story short (here’s the full story), I came to the conclusion that I was not getting what I was paying for and made the switch.

So, let’s see if you’re experiencing the same things with your current host and get you on your way to switching hosts so you don’t give up on blogging like I almost did!

1.  ARE YOU PAYING TOO MUCH FOR YOUR CURRENT WORDPRESS HOSTING?

So, there are many types of hosting plans available to you, depending on your blogs needs, including WordPress Hosting, Shared Hosting, and Cloud Hosting (my personal recommendation).

TMDHosting, Bluehost, and SiteGround all offer most of these hosting plans for the following prices:

TMDHosting

  • WordPress Hosting: $2.95/month
  • Shared Hosting: $2.95/month
  • Cloud Hosting: $5.95/month

Bluehost

  • WordPress Hosting: $3.95/month
  • Shared Hosting: $3.95/month
  • Cloud Hosting: Not Offered

SiteGround

  • WordPress Hosting: $3.95/month
  • Shared Hosting: $3.95/month
  • Cloud Hosting: $80.00/month

As you can see, TMDHosting offers the lowest prices overall for all of their hosting plans.

So, if you’re paying more than $2.95/month for WordPress/Shared Hosting or more than $5.95/month for Cloud Hosting, you 100% need to switch WordPress hosts.

2.  IS YOUR HOSTS TECHNICAL SUPPORT TEAM ACTUALLY SUPPORTIVE?

The main reason I left Bluehost is because I wasn’t getting the technical support that I was paying for.

If you didn’t know, your web host is responsible for managing all technical aspects of your WordPress blog.

So, if your website is crashing or you need to add a line of HTML code somewhere and can’t figure out how, your web host should be available to help you.

And, better yet, a good host will fix the problems for you (instead of relaying complicated steps to you so you can fix it yourself).

switch WordPress hosts

You pay for your host for a reason and you deserve to get what you are paying for.

Because I wasn’t getting what I was paying for from Bluehost, I switched to TMDHosting.

And, WOW!

TMDHosting’s customer + technical support teams are SPECTACULAR.

The other day, for example,  I needed to add “https” to the beginning of my domain name, so I put in a ticket with TMDHosting’s technical support team.

Within an hour, I got an email back telling me that they had added it for me and was good to go.

See, AMAZING.

If your WordPress host isn’t making your blogging life easier, it is seriously time to switch WordPress hosts.  (I 100% would have quit blogging if I stayed with Bluehost.)

3.  IS YOUR WEBSITE FAST?

We can all agree that we want fast websites that never crash, right?

I mean, there is nothing worse than excitedly clicking on a dope pin from Pinterest only to have to wait and wait and wait for the post to load.

So, how do you make sure that your website doesn’t do that?

You’ve gotsta host with a company that provides 32x faster website speeds than its competitors.

Yep, you read that right – TMDHosting is 32x faster than other hosting companies due to their crazy fast SSD servers. (Bluehost does not have these servers.)

TMDHosting also guarantee’s a 99.999% up-time for all their sites.

So, if your website is loading unbearably slow or is crashing frequently, switching WordPress hosts is the best thing you can do for your blogs reputation and success.

Speed up your social site in 15 minutes

HOW TO SWITCH WORDPRESS HOSTS

So, maybe you’ve been paying too much to host your blog.  Or, you aren’t getting the support and speed that you’re paying for.

Luckily for you, though, switching WordPress hosts is incredibly easy and can be done with ZERO downtime.

Now, my assumption moving forward is that you’re switching to TMDHosting for their low prices, awesome support, and crazy fast speeds.

So, to switch WordPress hosts, follow these simple steps:

1.  Visit TMDHosting + purchase one of their hosting plans using code “GREEN” to save 5% at checkout.

2. Put in a ticket with their technical support team asking them to transfer your WordPress site for you.

And….then…you’re done.

It really is as simple as that.  My website was transferred within 24 hours and my blog did not experience any downtime, as promised.

switch WordPress hosts

If you just started a blog and feel like you wanna rip your hair out every single time you sit down to work, I FEEL YOU.

I felt like this when I was hosting with the wrong company because my website never worked correctly.

And, if you feel duped by all the bloggers out there promoting Bluehost, I HELLA FEEL YOU.

I was and still am so confused by the promotion of Bluehost.

So, if you’ve been overpaying for hosting, have zero support from your host, or have a slow website, I urge you to make the switch.

I promise, you won’t regret it.

Did you make the switch to TMDHosting?  Tell us about your experience in the comments!

Happy blogging!

who is the best blog host for your business?

WordPress Hosting 101: Why You Need It To Start A Blog + Where To Get Started

So, you’re thinking about starting a blog?

Great choice! (This is an awesome community to be apart of!)

In your research on how to start a blog, you’ve likely come across something called WordPress hosting.

WordPress hosting is necessary for your blog if you want to have a self-hosted website.

Which you totally do – cause you definitely want to make money from your blog, right?

So, what exactly is WordPress hosting and why exactly do I need it if I want to start a profitable blog?

Great questions!  Let’s find out…

WORDPRESS HOSTING -- WORDPRESS HOSTING TIPS -- BEST WORDPRESS HOSTING -- WORDPRESS HOSTING STARTING A BLOG

This post may contain affiliate links.  All opinions are our own.  See disclosure here.

Starting a blog comes with following a lot of steps. (Download your checklist, here.)

It’s definitely not as easy as signing up for WordPress and jumping immediately into writing blog posts.

The first things that need to happen before you can design your website and start writing blog posts are:

1. Choosing and registering a domain name, and

2. Purchasing web hosting

WordPress hosting is super important to the success of your blog because it controls things like website speed and performance.

So, you’ll want to choose a reliable hosting company…and better, yet – an affordable one!

Today, we’ll talk about:

  • what WordPress hosting is
  • why you need WordPress hosting to make money blogging
  • who you should use for WordPress hosting to start a blog
  • how to start a blog with the best WordPress hosting site

Let’s dive in.

What is WordPress hosting?

WORDPRESS HOSTING -- WORDPRESS HOSTING TIPS -- BEST WORDPRESS HOSTING -- WORDPRESS HOSTING STARTING A BLOG

So, first things first, there are two different version of WordPress:  WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

WordPress.com is an extremely limited version of WordPress that does not give you many options to customize or monetize your blog.

Hint: if you want to earn money from your blog, don’t use WordPress.com – use WordPress.org.

WordPress.org is a self-hosted version of WordPress that allows you to add themes and plugins to customize your website and, most importantly, allows you to monetize your blog.

So, in order to use the self-hosted version of WordPress (WordPress.org), you need web hosting (a.k.a., WordPress hosting).  But, what in the damn heck is WordPress hosting?!

WordPress hosting is a service provided by a hosting company that manages all the technical aspects of running WordPress.

These types of things are all dependent on your WordPress host:

  • website speed
  • performance
  • up-time
  • security

You see, this is why it is so important to choose a reliable hosting company that provides top-notch customer and technical support to their customers.

Why do you need WordPress hosting for your blog?

Like I said, if you want to earn money from your blog, you need to use WordPress.org.  And, if you’re using WordPress.org, you need WordPress hosting.

So, in short, you need WordPress hosting if you want to earn money from your blog and become the self-employed blog boss that you’ve always dreamed of becoming!

But, for real, you should be rewarded for your blogging efforts and to do that you need to monetize your blog.

Monetizing your blog is the only way to earn a living from it and that is something you cannot do unless you have a self-hosted WordPress site.

So, once you’ve purchased WordPress hosting and have started your self-hosted WordPress blog, you can monetize your site in a number of ways, through:

  • Physical Products
  • Digital Products
  • eCourses
  • eBooks
  • Ads
  • Affiliate Marketing
  • Services
  • Memberships
  • Merch

As you can see, investing in solid WordPress hosting for your blog is an important step toward launching your website and earning your first dollar.

WORDPRESS HOSTING -- WORDPRESS HOSTING TIPS -- BEST WORDPRESS HOSTING -- WORDPRESS HOSTING STARTING A BLOG

Who should you use for WordPress Hosting?

I’ve hosted my blog with two different hosting companies:  Bluehost and TMDHosting.

See, if you’ve been doing research about how to start a blog, I am sure you’ve heard of Bluehost because I found out about Bluehost the same way – through other bloggers recommendations when researching how to start a blog.

Unfortunately, though, I had a horrible experience with Bluehost (which you can read about here), and switched to TMDHosting about six months into starting this blog.

Switching to TMDHosting was the best decision I ever made for this blog (besides getting the Divi theme) because they are affordable, reliable, professional, and all around awesome.

As I said, TMDHosting is a super affordable + reliable hosting option for your website, with prices starting at $2.95/month.

And, better yet, they have amazing customer service and technical support.

I couldn’t rave more about their support teams – who have always been there to answer my questions and fix any issues I am having with my website.

See, remember how I said your hosting company should manage all technical aspects of your WordPress blog?  Well, TMDHosting gets it all done.

They will even install WordPress on your website for you, for free.

So, you’ve learned what WordPress hosting is, why you need it, and who the best blog hosting site actually is.

Now, it’s time to finally launch your killer blog!

To start a blog with TMDHosting, simply follow these simple steps:

1.  Choose and register your domain name (I recommend doing this with GoDaddy)

2.  Click here to purchase WordPress hosting from TMDHosting (save 5% with code ‘GREEN’)

3.  Put in a ticket to have TMD install WordPress on your website, for FREE

4.  Choose a theme to begin designing your website (I couldn’t live without the Divi theme)

5.  Install the necessary plugins (learn more about that, here)

6.  Begin creating + promoting kickass content!

Now, this is a brief overview of how to start a blog with TMDHosting, but for a much, much more in depth explanation, head on over to our how-to-start-a-blog post!

WORDPRESS HOSTING -- WORDPRESS HOSTING TIPS -- BEST WORDPRESS HOSTING -- WORDPRESS HOSTING STARTING A BLOG

If you feel duped by all the blog posts that have told you that you can start a blog for free, I’m sorry.

I felt that way, too.

Unfortunately starting a business comes with costs, but WordPress hosting is a necessary investment that you simply cannot avoid if you want to start a profitable blog.

Luckily, TMDHosting is super affordable!

(And seriously, you cannot beat their customer and technical support.  Hands down, the best company I’ve ever dealt with in terms of support.)

So, click here to easily get started with TMDHosting!  You won’t regret it!

How To Start A Self-Hosted Blog So You Can Quit Your 9-5.

you need to work 9-5?

start a blog so you can quit your day job.

How To Start A Self-Hosted Blog So You Can Quit Your 9-5.

So, you’re thinking about starting a blog, eh?  Awesome choice.

Blogging is a sweet gig that gives you the opportunity to:

  • love your job
  • express yourself creatively
  • earn an income & quit your “normal” job
  • join a community of awesome peeps

If you wanna make money from your blog, (which I can assume,  since you’re here), it is crucial that you start a self-hosted WordPress blog as opposed to a blog hosted by WordPress.com or Blogger.

Having a self-hosted blog means that you can monetize your website – something that’s obviously essential if you’re gonna earn a living from your blog.

Before you can monetize your blog, though, we gotta complete some pretty crucial steps.

This post may contain affiliate links.  All opinions are our own.  See our disclosure, here.

Before you can make money from your blog, you have to build the foundation from which that money can be earned.

Ya feel?

You’ll need to:

  • choose a domain name,
  • find an affordable & reliable hosting company, and
  • install WordPress(.org) on your website.

After that, you’ll be able to dive into the fun stuff, like designing your website and writing blog posts.

Now, let me explain the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, or, essentially, not needing hosting and needing hosting.

(Cause this ish confused the heck out of me when I was starting out.)

[et_bloom_inline optin_id="optin_19"]

SELF-HOSTED VERSUS NOT

Having a self-hosted blog, as opposed to…not, is essential to you earning a living from your blog.

A non-self-hosted blog would be one that is hosted on a blogging website, such as WordPress.com or Blogger.

For example, running a blog on WordPress.com:

  • gives you little to no customization control (so you can’t create a brand)
  • gives you little to no monetization options (so you can’t make money)
  • does not give you the option to have your own domain name (will appear as yourwebsite.wordpress.com)

Although it may seem enticing to start with a free blogging option such as the ones mentioned, it simply isn’t worth your time if your goal is to make money from your blog.

So, to launch a blog that you can earn money from, you’ll need:

  • to register a domain name
  • purchase web hosting
  • install the WordPress.org software

We can go over these, now.

Psst, if you already have a WordPress.com blog, let me redirect your attention briefly to this swell post by WP Beginner that explains in great detail “How To Easily Move Your Blog From WordPress.com to WordPress.org.

CHOOSING A DOMAIN NAME FOR YOUR BLOG

A domain name is what your website will be called.  (For instance, our domain name is whosayswhat.co.)

You want to choose a domain name that:

  • isn’t too similar to another one
  • is relevant to your brand
  • is rememberable

Then, once you decide on the perfect name for your blog, you can register your domain name with GoDaddy for as little as $5.99/YEAR.

Domain names are relatively cheap, so don’t be fooled into purchasing one for more than $10 per year.

With a registered domain name, you’re able to sign up for web hosting to launch your blog.

SIGNING UP FOR WEB HOSTING

Once you have a registered domain name, you’re ready to sign up for web hosting.

Your web host is responsible for managing all the technical aspects of your WordPress site, such as site speed and uptime.

Since your host is responsible for your blogs speed and uptime, it is super important to choose somebody who is reliable.

Thankfully, you don’t have to pay high prices for a web host who is also reliable.

For all your hosting needs, I highly, highly recommend TMDHosting.

TMDHosting has:

  • low prices
  • awesome customer support
  • even better technical support
  • 20x faster website speeds
  • 99.999% website uptime

You can get started with TMDHosting for as little as 2.95/month and have your website up and running in as little as an hour.

In fact, TMDHosting will install WordPress on your website for FREE, which is our next step towards launching your blog!

SAVE 5% WHEN YOU USE CODE “GREEN” AT CHECKOUT.

INSTALLING WORDPRESS ON YOUR WEBSITE

The final step that needs to happen before you can start designing your site and writing blog posts, is installing WordPress on your website.

I would explain the steps to do this, but I don’t have to!  TMDHosting will install WordPress, for you, for FREE once you’ve purchased a hosting plan with them.

This is so major, cause I can tell you from experience that, installing WordPress is no easy feat.  (Maybe I’m just hugely technically challenged, but I could not figure this out for the life of me.  I eventually had to pay somebody from Fiverr to help me out.)

(You’re probably thinking, “why did she have to install it herself, she just said TMDHosting does it for you?!”  Well, I started this blog with Bluehost and things didn’t work out so well between us.  You can read about my *not-so-good* experience with Bluehost, here.)

So, anywhooo, once you’ve purchased a hosting plan with TMDHosting, simply:

  • put in a ticket with their technical support team, which you can access by logging in, here
  • wait for them to tell you your website is up and running
  • begin creating awesome shit

If you’re starting a blog so you can earn some cash and quit your 9-5, I highly suggest reading on for another tip that will help you quit your 9-5 sooner.

ANOTHER HELPFUL STEP IN YOUR JOURNEY TOWARDS QUITTING YOUR 9-5

Don’t get me wrong, starting a blog is an awesome step towards quitting your 9-5.

But, to speed the process up a bit – and give you more time to work on your blogging business – we can help you budget smart so you can work less.

If you’re able to drastically decrease your expenses, you can work fewer hours at your current job.  Then, you’ve got more time to create content and earn money from blogging.

It’s a win, win!

Bluehost Review 2018: Does Bluehost Live Up To It’s High Praise?

you need your 9-5?

The answer to quitting your day job?  Starting a blog.  Dive in, today!

Bluehost Review 2018: Does Bluehost Live Up To It’s High Praise?

If you’re apart of the blogging world – or are looking to join this awesome club – I’m sure you’ve heard of Bluehost.

They sure were the only company I could find people talking about when I started doing research on how to start a blog.

So, after reading tons of blog posts about how to start a blog – most of which were recommending Bluehost , I went with them for my WordPress host.

And then I attempted to start my blog – but wouldn’t get very far because my site was constantly crashing.

I very quickly started wondering why on earth so many people were recommending Bluehost…and then even more quickly switched to a better hosting company.

This post may contain affiliate links.  All reviews are our own, honest opinion.  See disclaimer here.
I seriously thought it was a joke when I started experiencing problems with my website.

I mean, you know – starting a blog is hard.  And then, like, running into a million technical issues that you have no clue how to fix is hard!

So naturally, I took to Google to fix my problems.

And Google told me to talk to my website’s hosting company.

Easy enough, right?

Merp, I wish it had been easy (but I’m gonna give you the low-down on that in a little).

First, I’m gonna present you with some cold, hard facts so you have some [somewhat] non-biased information about Bluehost.

So, what does Bluehost have to offer?
bluehost review, bluehost review 2018, wordpress hosting, how to start a blog, how to start a blog 2018, how to make money blogging
Bluehost, like most hosting companies, offer a variety of hosting options depending on your websites needs.

Among these options are:

*prices may vary

**hell nah,  those aren’t affiliate links….just helpful links.

As you can see, their hosting prices greatly vary depending on which plan you choose (and how much storage you need).

If you’re starting a blog, you likely won’t need anything above Cloud hosting.

So that’s cool, Bluehost has multiple hosting plans that will obviously fulfill the needs of many people – but what do you get with purchase?

Each hosting plan comes with a variety of features, most notable including:

  • their money back guarantee (30 days)
  • automatic updates
  • 24/7 expert support (which sounds nice but we’ll talk about this later)
  • free domain and
  • free email account

I mean what’s not to like, right?

You read a bunch of bloggers tips on ‘how to start a blog‘ and all of them tell you to get started by signing up with Bluehost.

Then, you visit their website and see reasonable prices and great features.

So, you purchase and you’re so excited to start blogging!

But, you quickly realize Bluehost is not everything it is cracked up to be.

Womp.

[et_bloom_inline optin_id="optin_18"]
My (not-so-great) experience with Bluehost
Having had no prior experience creating and running a blog, me and Matt had to do a lot of research on our own on how to start a blog and ultimately followed the recommended steps and services that other bloggers provided us.

You know, the usual – pick a domain name, signup with WordPress, choose a WordPress hosting company, etc.

We followed all of the recommended steps – along with recommended services – and seemingly were all set to start our blog.

Then we ran into some issues…nay, LOTS of issues.

The main issue is that our website was constantly crashing.  Or our site frequently experienced glitches.  Or we would try to visit our website on our phones and would be amazed (in a bad way) at how slow our website was.

And the most frustrating part?  We had no idea why our website was acting this way.

After some research, we learned that our hosting company would be the people needed to address these issues, so to Bluehost we went.

But, when we would attempt to contact Bluehost to figure out why our site was not operating correctly, we would always walk away feeling even more confused.

Getting in touch with their support team was awful.  Every single time I tried to chat with somebody, it would take 10-30 minutes to connect and if it ever did connect, I would almost always get disconnected mid-conversation.

Submitting tickets & emailing was no better.

Finally, we had had enough and began researching other hosting services – and were surprised that with a little more digging, not everybody and their blogging momma used and loved Bluehost.

Ultimately, our search efforts connected us with TMDHosting, and dang, are we thankful for that.

So, who do we recommend?  TMDHosting.
bluehost review, bluehost review 2018, wordpress hosting, how to start a blog, how to start a blog 2018, how to make money blogging
I’ll save you some time and get right into the juicy info (the boring information will follow) – TMDHosting’s customer service and technical support is amazing!!!!!!

Upon arriving on their website, you are instantly connected with a customer service agent via live chat that is ready to take care of all of your needs.  They walk you through the entire purchasing process to make sure your questions are answered and to ensure that the plan you are purchasing is the best choice for your business.

Seriously, they rock.  And it doesn’t end there.

Once you’re using TMDHosting as your hosting service for your WordPress blog (or website), their team of technical support is on call 24/7/365.

Yes, you read that right.  They are always available to help you.  And I can vouch for them.

I’m quite technically challenged and thus have had to submit many a ticket to their technical support crew to help me through some site issues.  Each time, they have gotten back to me within the first half hour, kept me up-to-date with what they were doing to fix my site’s issue, and then updated me when the issue was fixed. Some things were fixed within minutes, while others took longer due to the extent of the issue – but nonetheless, my issues were fixed promptly and professionally.

This was an incredibly different (better) experience than the one I had with Bluehost in regards to fixing technical issues on my website and I instantly knew I was in good hands.

TMDHosting takes your ticket and FIXES the problem themselves – Bluehost on the other hand tells you a million technical steps to follow to fix the issue but like, I ain’t no IT wizard.

Regardless of the issue at hand, every single time I’ve dealt with TMD’s customer service or technical support, they have been wonderful and have honestly made my blogging experience so much better.

Anyway, I was instantly impressed with TMDHosting and honestly, I just don’t understand why everybody recommends Bluehost.

If you’re looking for an affordable and reliable WordPress hosting company, I’d go with TMDHosting (or literally anybody besides Bluehost, lol).

Speed up your social site in 15 minutes, Free website transfer and script installation
What else does TMDHosting have to offer?
bluehost review, bluehost review 2018, wordpress hosting, how to start a blog, how to start a blog 2018, how to make money blogging
TMD has a lot more than great customer and technical support to offer.

They, too, have great prices and awesome features that come with the purchasing of one of their hosting plans.

The hosting plans that TMD has are:

*prices may vary

I’m gonna be honest with you – I only really know what the first three of those do – but if you’re starting a blog or small business one of those first three options should work just fine for your needs.

I started with WordPress hosting and upgraded to Cloud Hosting as my blog continued to grow – a process that was quick and simple with the help of TMD.

With the purchase of any of their hosting plans, you also receive:

  • application installation (like WordPress)
  • components installations
  • free templates with installation (to easily design your website)
  • automatic updates
  • free domain
  • 60 days money back guarantee
  • 24/7/365 live support – THAT RESPOND.

I’ve been operating my blog via TMDHosting for over two years and I’ve never – I mean, NEVER – had a negative experience.

What are you waiting for? You could have your blog or business up and running by the end of today!

All the steps you need to launch your blog
I had a negative experience with Bluehost and want to save you – and others – from making the same mistake.

I mean, nobody has time to sign up with a crappy (sorry not sorry) hosting company only to find themselves switching to another one two weeks later.

Because the blogging process is stressful enough – and I enjoy knowing that my website is always going to be operating properly.  And if it’s not?  I know TMD has my back.

(BTW – TMD makes switching from one website host to another super easy with zero website downtime if you’re into that kind of thang.)  Learn more about that, here.

But ultimately, you gotta do your own research and make your own educated decision – I just hope I could help a little bit 😉

And if you’re in the early stages of planning and creating your blog, I wish you the best of luck on your blogging endeavors!  To make the process a little less stressful, download our “how to start a blog” checklist!

If you’ve had an experience with Bluehost – good or bad – leave it in the comments below!  I’d love to hear others’ thoughts!
Happy Blogging!

you need that 9-5?

Our FREE eCourse hooks you up with all the info you need to start working less.

How To Quit Your Job And Work From Home Full-Time In 6 Months Or Less

So, Matt and I did a thing recently….

We both quit our full-time jobs to work for ourselves, at home.

It was probably one of the most nerve-wracking and then instantly satisfying experiences of our lives. So, how’d we do it?

And how can you do it, too?

(Trust me, quitting your 9-5 feels AHMAZING…incredible….exhilarating…awesome.)

It’s a two step process to quit your 9-5 and both can begin happening, today.

Ready??!!!

Having the ability to quit your 9-5 (and essentially your steady and reliable flow of income) is a two step process.

Step 1:  Smart Budgeting

Step 2:  Starting A Blog

First, you’ll want to budget your money and decrease your monthly expenses so they are as low as possible. Then, you can start a blog to pay for your lowered cost of living. (Or simply work less hours at your job.)

When we accomplished step one, we were able to drastically lower the amount of hours we spent at work each week.  If you’re interested in learning how to work less, join our FREE mini email series to learn how to budget smart and work less!

Then, because we were working less, starting a blog was easier and ultimately led to us quitting our jobs to rely solely on this blog for income.  If you’re interested in starts a blog, grab our 10-step checklist, here!

Wanna know the best part? You can start budgeting your money and setting up your blog as soon as you finish reading this post.

Ready to quit your 9-5, ASAP?

Step One: Smart Budgeting
The first step in the process towards quitting your day job is to budget smart so your money is working for you, not against you.

To begin budgeting smart you’ll need to:

1. Understand your monthly income and expenses

2. Decrease your monthly expenses by as much as possible

Having an accurate idea of how much money you earn and spend each month with give you great insight into how much you need to (or don’t need to) work to pay for your bills.

[et_bloom_inline optin_id="optin_17"]
// UNDERSTANDING YOUR FINANCES \\
To budget smart, you have to understand your finances.

Such as, how much money do you make each month and how much money do you spend each month?

Take the time to calculate how much money you earn each month and how much money you spend each month.

Once you have an understanding of your monthly flow of income and expenses, you’ll be able to monitor your spending and decrease your expenses over time.

// DECREASE YOUR EXPENSES \\

After you’ve calculated your monthly income and monthly expenses, you’re able to start actively decreasing how much money you spend each month.

If you haven’t already, make a list of all your monthly bills and of how much you spend on things like groceries and gas.

Then, go through your list and make a plan to decrease or get rid of each expense.

Want 30+ ideas on how to decrease your monthly expenses?  Sign up for our FREE 4-day Budget Boss eSeries To Working Less, here!

You’ll be able to quit your 9-5 far sooner if you have less monthly expenses to pay for rather than more….ya feel?

// GET RID OF DEBT \\

Debt can be huge contributor to your monthly expenses + can be even harder to pay off if you don’t have a ton of extra income.

With interest rates at an all-time high, people are finding it difficult to pay off their credit card debt in a reasonable amount of time.

So, instead of continuing to make minimum payments on your credit cards while wracking up thousands in interest, consider consolidating your debt into a personal loan.

Personal loans for debt consolidation are awesome because you will:

  • save mad cash
  • cut down your payback time
  • increase your credit score (usually; everybody is different)

When I consolidated my debt with PersonalLoans.com, I saved over $3,000, paid back my debt in 2 years instead of 5, and increased my credit score by over 50 points.

PersonalLoans.com is an easy + 100% online loan company who can approve your application and fund your loan in as little as 1 business day.

This is something I highly recommend doing if you are serious about slashing your expenses so you can afford your best life.

THE BUDGET BOSS BUNDLE IS YOUR ANSWER TO FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE

Step Two:  Start A Blog
Starting a blog is awesome for so many reasons, including:

  • writing about and promoting something that you love every single day
  • creating your own work schedule
  • taking vacation time and sick time whenever you need to
  • never changing out of your pajamas if you don’t want to
  • having the ability to express yourself creatively every single day
  • getting to be apart of a great community

I could go on and on, but I’m sure you get my point. Blogging is AWESOME. I recommend starting a blog as your avenue to self-employment instead of another traditional business for two reasons:

1.  It is inexpensive to start a blog

2.  There are little to no overhead costs

Now, there are many articles on the internet that will tell you that you can start a blog for free. And, while they aren’t lying, they forget to mention that you cannot start a PROFITABLE blog for free.

In other words, if you want to earn a living from your blog, you can’t create that said blog for free.

But, as I mentioned, the start-up costs to launch a blog are pretty cheap in comparison to the amount of money you could end up earning from your blog.

So, with that being said, I’d love to guide you through how to start a money-making blog for as cheap as possible, cuz, I feel you….spending money sucks.

But, putting your hard-earned cash towards creating your own blog is worth every dime.  Trust.  I mean, some bloggers make over $100,000 per month sooooooooo….

Alright, alright…Lets get into the 10-step process!

[et_bloom_inline optin_id="optin_19"]
1: Your Domain Name
Before you can launch your blog, you’ll need a domain name.

Your domain name will be the name of your blog, such as www.whosayswhat.co.

Choosing a domain name for your blog seems like a huge decision, and it is, but don’t put too much pressure on yourself.  You could spend an endless amount of time trying to come up with the perfect name for your blog and still be contemplating ideas six months from now.

So, what I suggest is to make a list of 5-10 domain names that you like.

Maybe you name your blog something that relates to what you’ll be blogging about.  Or maybe you’re launching a lifestyle blog so your own name as the domain name could be perfect.

Once you’ve made your list, you’ll want to visit GoDaddy for two reasons:

1.  To see if your domain name is available

2. To register your domain name once you’ve chosen an available one that you like

Your domain name will run you about $5-$10 per year. Like I said, so worth it!

Register your domain name with GoDaddy for less than $10/month by clicking here.
2: WordPress Hosting For Your Blog
how to start a blog, how to start a blog for beginners, web hosting, website hosting, wordpress host, wordpress hosting, how to switch hosts, how to switch wordpress hosts, how to transfer hosts, blogging, blogging for beginners
Remember how I said you can’t start a profitable blog for free?  Purchasing web hosting for your WordPress blog is the main reason for this.

See, if you want to earn money from your blog you need ways to monetize your site.  And to monetize your blog, you need to use WordPress.org instead of the free version of WordPress – WordPress.com.  And, finally, in order to use WordPress.org, you need web hosting to become a self-hosted WordPress blog.

Web hosting is super important to the success of your blog because they will be managing all the technical aspects of your website, like site speed and up-time.

So, now that you understand why you need web hosting and what the heck it is, lets talk about how to get it for cheap.

I use TMDHosting for my blog and they have never, ever failed me.

TMDHosting’s prices are affordable and their customer and technical support teams are out of this world.

I highly, highly recommend TMDHosting for your blog because as you start this new blogging journey, I am willing to bet that you’ll run into an issue here or there.

And when you run into a technical issue with your blog, you want a team that has your back – and TMDHosting will always have your back, 24/7/365.

You can purchase WordPress hosting from TMDHosting for as low as $2.95 per month. See, super affordable, right?!

Score WordPress hosting for your blog for as low as $2.95/month with TMDHosting by clicking here.

3: Installing WordPress On Your Blog
Remember how I said TMDHosting is awesome?  Well, you’re about to find out why.

Installing WordPress on your new self-hosted blog is super simple – because TMDHosting will do it for you.

All you have to do to have WordPress installed on your blog is:

1. Login to your user area with TMDHosting by clicking here

2. Put in a ticket with their technical support team asking them to install WordPress for you

Yep, it is THAT simple.

They will get back to you within the hour to update you on the status of your ticket and will have WordPress installed for you by the end of the day.

Yep, you could be designing your dream website in as little as a day when you have TMDHosting as your host.

Oh, and this part is free.  Double score.

4: Designing Your Blog & Creating Your Brand
Designing your website is super fun.  It might even be my favorite part of blogging.

But, before you start designing your website, I suggest creating a brand for your blogging business by creating:

  • Logo(s)
  • 1-3 brand colors
  • 1-2 brand fonts
  • A “slogan” that quickly describes the purpose of your blog that you can insert across social media sites

Creating a strong brand for your blog is super important because it will help you stand out from the crowd, allowing people to recognize your content instantly.

Here is an example of the branding on our website (designed with the Divi Theme):

how to start a blog, how to start a blog for beginners, web hosting, website hosting, wordpress host, wordpress hosting, how to switch hosts, how to switch wordpress hosts, how to transfer hosts, blogging, blogging for beginners
Trust me when I say that there are hundreds, maybe even thousands, of other blogs on the internet.  So, how are you gonna stand out?   WITH YOUR KICK-ASS UNIQUE BRAND!

Once you’ve created a solid and unique brand for your business, it’s time to start designing your blogs website by purchasing and installing a WordPress theme.

You can get free WordPress themes, however, I do not recommend them because hundreds of other people are also using them and they don’t give you much – if any – control over the branding of your website.

To have complete design control over your blog, I suggest using the Divi Theme by Elegant Themes.

The Divi Theme is a drag-and-drop system that gives you 100% control over the look of your website and is super user friendly (requiring zero HTML).

The Divi Theme will cost you $89 per year or $249 for lifetime access.  Keep in mind, that when purchasing the Divi Theme you are purchasing a subscription to Elegant Themes so you’ll have access to additional WordPress tools like an email marketing plugin and a social sharing plugin that are great for growing your blog.

To learn more about the Divi Theme and start designing your blog, click here.
Divi WordPress Theme
5: Adding Plugins To Your WordPress Blog
When I was talking about purchasing a subscription to Elegant Themes earlier, I mentioned gaining access to additional WordPress tools, such as plugins. But, what the heck is a plugin?!

Well, WordPress plugins allow you to further customize your website.  Or they can help you with things like site speed and SEO (search engine optimization).

It is best to not add too many plugins to your blog, though, because they can interfere with your theme or slow down your website.

Below is a list of all the plugins we use and love on our blog and what they are used for.

And, psssst, they’re all free!

Once you’ve designed your blog with the Divi theme and installed all of your plugins, you’ll be ready to start publishing blog posts and promoting your blog.

And, don’t forget…all the plugins I’ve mentioned are FREE.

Remember these plugins with your FREE 10-step checklist
6: Growing Your Email List
So, you’ve launched your blog and began publishing blog posts regularly – Go you!  This is an awesome accomplishment!

But, how do you turn those blog posts into income? Great question and we’ll get into the specifics of earning a living from your blog in a few.

But, first,  you’re gonna wanna sign up for email marketing with MailChimp (for FREE) to start collecting and growing your email list ASAP.

MailChimp is very user-friendly and makes creating automated email campaigns simple.  They also have awesome resources for creating opt-in landing pages and signup boxes.

Growing your email list from the get-go is hella important because your email list will become your most reliable source of income once you start teaming up with affiliate programs and creating products.

So, how do you grow your email list?

1. OFFER FREEBIES to go along with your blog posts.  These could be:

– Planner Printables

– Worksheets/Workbooks

– Guides

– Checklists

– Templates

– Mini Email Series

2. Create email sales funnels (learn more about this, here)

Then, once you’ve created freebies that will entice people to sign up for your email list, you’ll need to place opt-in boxes on your blog where people can enter their email in exchange for your freebie.

An opt-in box looks like the one below and can be generated directly through MailChimp (see how, here), or through your Bloom plugin by Elegant Themes (learn how, here).

Make sure it is EASY for people to sign up for your email list because, like I mentioned, your email list will become invaluable for generating income from your blog.

Now, you’re ready to start promoting your blog and gathering emails, buds!

Get started with MailChimp (for FREE up to 1,500 subscribers) by clicking here.
7 // 8: Making Money From Your Blog
Finally!  We’ve made it to the part you’ve all been waiting for – how to make some money from your blog so you can quit your job!

There are a lot of ways to earn an income from your blog, the four major streams of income coming from:

1. Ads

2. Affiliate Marketing

3. Physical Products

4. Digital Products

Firstly, ads.

//  ADS  \\
I do not recommend starting with ads on your blog as your main source of income.  In order to make a significant income from ads, you need hundreds of thousands of pageviews per day….not worth your time.

The other three avenues to make money don’t require nearly as much traffic as ads would, so these are the ones I recommend putting your energy towards.

So, next, affiliate marketing.

//  AFFILIATE MARKETING  \\
Affiliate marketing is your fastest route to earning a living on your blog and the avenue I recommend you start with first.

Affiliate marketing is when you promote a product on your site and for every person who purchases something through your link, you get a portion of the sale.

You’ll want to find a few affiliate programs that are relevant to your blog and promote, promote, promote!

Write blog posts about these products and offer freebies to gather emails.  Then, create eye-catching pins for Pinterest to lead people to sign up for your email sales funnel, further pitching them your affiliate.

To learn more about affiliate marketing, click here.

//  DIGITAL & PHYSICAL PRODUCTS  \\
The final two ways to make money from your blog are pretty self explanatory – create physical or digital products and promote them the same way you would an affiliate program.

Products you could create to sell on your blog include:

  • eBooks
  • eCourses
  • Apps
  • Planners
  • Merch

Get creative with what you have to sell on your blog!  The world is your oyster!

Don’t forget to continue publishing new blog posts weekly because this content will be the fastest way to grow your email list and sell your stuff.

9: Promoting Your Blog
In order to make money from your blog (from affiliate links and products), you need consistent traffic to your blog. You can get consistent traffic to your blog by using a combination of two tools:

1. Pinterest

2. Tailwind

I’m sure you know what Pinterest is – an awesome place to find new ideas and outfit inspo. But, maybe what you didn’t know is that Pinterest is actually a search engine and not a social media site.

Because Pinterest is a search engine, you need to make sure your blogs Pinterest profile is search engine optimized by:

  • Using a branded profile photo
  • Writing a keyword rich profile description
  • Creating 10-20 boards with keyword rich descriptions
  • Creating branded board covers (with Canva)
  • Pinning relevant content to your boards

Here is an example of our SEO’d Pinterest profile:

how to start a blog, how to start a blog for beginners, web hosting, website hosting, wordpress host, wordpress hosting, how to switch hosts, how to switch wordpress hosts, how to transfer hosts, blogging, blogging for beginners
After SEO’ing your Pinterest profile, you’ll want to get added to some Pinterest group boards by visiting PinGroupie and following these steps:

1. Search a keyword that relates to your blog

2. Visit Pinterest profiles from your search result

3. Follow the instructions in the group board bio to be added to the board (this usually consists of emailing or DM’ing the group board owner or it will state that the board is no longer accepting new contributors)

Don’t worry if you email 50 group boards and only get added to 5.  This is normal.  Just keep swimming.

Once you’ve been added to a few group boards (the more the better, so never stop applying), you’re ready to start automating your pinning with Tailwind.

You can get started with Tailwind for FREE by clicking here.

Here is a quick overview of how to begin automating your Pinterest pinning with Tailwind (and drive traffic to your blog). If you want a more in-depth explanation, visit this post on how we increased our traffic by 64% in 30 days.

First, after signing up for Tailwind, go to “publisher” –> “board lists.”  This is where you can group together similar boards to schedule pins to them quicker. (See below)

how to start a blog, how to start a blog for beginners, web hosting, website hosting, wordpress host, wordpress hosting, how to switch hosts, how to switch wordpress hosts, how to transfer hosts, blogging, blogging for beginners
Next, click here to install your Tailwind browser extension to easily pin content from Pinterest to your Tailwind schedule.

To start scheduling your pins and other relevant pins to your Tailwind schedule, login to Pinterest and click on your browser extension button that you just installed (looks like a blue feather).

Then, click on all the pins you want to schedule. Finally, choose which boards you want each of those pins to be pinned to and click “schedule all.’

how to start a blog, how to start a blog for beginners, web hosting, website hosting, wordpress host, wordpress hosting, how to switch hosts, how to switch wordpress hosts, how to transfer hosts, blogging, blogging for beginners
Finally, while in Tailwind, go to “publisher” –> “scheduled pins” to see an overview of all the pins you have scheduled.  Don’t forget to hit “shuffle queue” and you’ll be good to go until your queue runs out.  At that point, just repeat the process.

Tailwind is great because it drives traffic to your site by strategically pinning your pins at optimized times for your viewers.

To lean more about using Tailwind to drive traffic to your blog, click here.

Using Pinterest and Tailwind to promote your blog will only cost you $15 per month (once your FREE trial runs out) and is worth every penny.

Tailwind is the quickest and cheapest way to drive traffic to your blog without spending hours manually pinning or paying hundreds of dollars for ads to promote your blog on Facebook and Instagram.

Once your blog is set up and operating regularly, you’ll want to monitor your site through targeted analytics to ensure that what you are doing is working.

Get started with a free trial of Tailwind by clicking here!

10: Monitor Your Progress
Once you’ve launched your blog, it is important to monitor its progress through targeted analytics.

This way, you can make sure that the content you are producing is working for your goal of earning an income.

I monitor my blogs progress with Google Analytics. Google Analytics makes it super simple to see what posts/pages are getting the most traffic, where that traffic is coming from, and how long users are staying on your site.

This is all super valuable information because you can begin targeting your content towards what people are interested in the most. You can also get an idea of what type of products people would be interested in buying from your site.

Another way to monitor your blogs progress is through MailChimps and Pinterests stats.

Now, without further ado….the moment you’ve all been waiting for….it’s time to QUIT YOUR JOB!

Step Three: Quit Your 9-5 And Become A Blog Boss
Woo!  We made it!  It is finally time time to quit your job!

After budgeting your money and cutting costs you launched a dope-ass blog to start earning an income.

Now, it’s time to continue pumping out content till your blog generates enough income for you to quit your job.

It took me and Matt 3 months of working on our blog full-time (we launched 2 years ago but hadn’t put in the time until now) to have the ability to quit our jobs.

Quitting our jobs was the best thing we ever did for our family because now we get to devote our time to the things we actually enjoy – instead of going through the motions that having a full-time job often entails.

Trust me, you won’t regret this decision to change your life for the better.

Cheers to making this awesome life choice!  And happy budgeting and blogging, friend!
Till next time!
xx Michelle
