How To Create A Night Routine To Increase Positivity + Productivity

I was lacking a night routine in my life till as of recent and I seriously don’t know how I was living without one for 25 years.

Since incorporating a night routine into my life a few months back I’ve been experiencing some noticeable differences, including that;

  • I’ve never had this much energy (well, maybe before the two kids, ha)
  • I fall asleep faster & sleep better
  • I have more productive mornings

Overall, I am a happier person now that I’ve committed to a night routine.

If you often feel stressed and/or find it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep, a night routine is your answer.

So, steal my 2019 night routine to increase positivity and productivity in your life!

The perfect night routine includes these 7 things:

  1. Shutting down
  2. Preparing for tomorrow
  3. Tidying up
  4. Stretching/meditating
  5. Tending to your mental health
  6. Skin care
  7. Going to bed at a reasonable time

A night routine is worth every minute because it will prepare your mind and body for a deep sleep which will, in turn, increase your happiness and productivity in the morning.

1.  Shut down from all electronics

SHUT IT DOWN! (Hey, any New Girl fans out there??)

It is no secret that being on your smart-phone or tablet, or watching TV until you go to sleep is super bad for you.  (Check out why Reading On A Screen Before Bed [Could] Be Killing you, here.)

Now, do I have your attention?

See, the experts say you should be shutting down from all electronic devices up to two hours before your bedtime – but hey, even thirty minutes is a good start in my books.

I try my best to quit all electronics two hours before bedtime at 11 pm which gives me the perfect amount of time for my night routine checklist.

To stay committed to being off your phone until the next morning, set up a charging station (outside of your bedroom) where you can safely leave your phone until tomorrow.

(Eeeeek!  Yes, this means that you need a real alarm clock.)

Pro Tip:  Start by shutting down from electronics thirty minutes before bed during your first week and then gradually increase to two hours.

2.  Prepare for tomorrow

I have found it to be immensely helpful to prepare for tomorrow, the night before.

And, I get to sleep in longer, so there’s that!

I use my night routine to prepare for tomorrow in two ways:

1.  Prepping my meals for tomorrow

2.  Picking my outfit out for the morning + workout clothes for gym time

After you’ve shut down from all electronics, prepare your breakfast and lunch for the following day.

Then, pick out your outfit for the morning (whose got time for trying to look cute at 5am?) and lay out your workout clothes for when you get home (no excuses!).

Another great way to prepare for tomorrow is to spend time with your planner so you know what important things need to be crossed off your to-do list.

3.  Tidy up!

Who likes waking up to a disorganized space?  Not me!

Waking up to a full sink of dishes means there’s no way I’ll be able to concentrate on working or whatever else needs to be done.

So, I take the extra time during my night routine checklist to quickly tidy up.

(I tidy up in less than 30 minutes by following these 5 cleaning hacks.)

Having a tidy house before bed ensures that you won’t be searching for your shoes or your keys the next morning!

4.  Stretch or do yoga

An amazing thing that you can do for your body and your mind is to include some form of stretching or yoga to your night routine.

Doing yoga or simply stretching help to relax + destress from the day.

Stretching/yoga is also proven to:

  • increase flexibility
  • improve posture
  • prevent injuries
  • increase nutrient absorption
  • decrease soreness
  • calm your mind

Pro Tip:  Find guided yoga videos on YouTube.  Yoga With Adriene is my favorite!

Seriously, if you only take one thing away from my night routine, let it be this!

5.  Tend to your mental health

Life can get exhausting, especially in this technology-crazed generation that we live in.

So, it’s important to wind down and tend to your mental health at the end of each day.

There are tons of ways to tend to your mental health, but my favorite are:

All of these options are great ways to cleanse your mind of unwanted thoughts and wind your brain down in preparation for a good nights sleep.

6.  Your skin care routine

It wouldn’t be a night routine checklist if you didn’t tend to your skin care routine!

Getting into the habit of loving your skin each night will totally benefit you in the future to keep acne and wrinkles at bay.

I stick to a super simple, cruelty-free skin care routine:

Step 1: Cleanse with Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap

Step 2:  Calm with Mario Badescu Facial Spray With Aloe, Herbs, And Rosewater

Step 3: Moisturize with Rosehip Oil

Like I said, I keep it quick and simple…cuz I’ve got sleeping to do!

Do whatever works best for your skin, and hop into bed!

7.  Go to bed (at a reasonable time!)

Has it really already been two full hours without any electronics?!

AVOID THE TEMPTATION TO CHECK YOUR PHONE BEFORE BED.

Your Twitter feed can wait until the morning 😉

Now that your night routine is coming to an end, it’s important to make sure you’re getting the right amount of sleep each night.

Because, regardless of how awesome your night routine is, it won’t be quite as good if you aren’t getting the right amount of sleep for your body.

Try experimenting on days when you don’t need an alarm clock to wake up and see when your body naturally wakes you up from sleeping.

This will help to get an idea of how many hours of sleep your body needs to replenish itself for a new day.

Then, based on your magic number, set a bedtime and stick to it.

Don’t forget to plan two hours in advance of your bedtime to start shutting down!

You’ll also want to make sure your room is optimized for a good nights sleep by keeping the temperature cool and using an essential oil diffusing humidifier!

Before we jump into all these awesome goodies you need to create the perfect night routine, let’s establish our night routine, eh?

I shared my current night routine in a recent post, 7 Night Routines You Need To Have The Best Night Sleep, explaining why I do these seven things each night before bed.

  1. Shut Down (from electronics including smartphones, tablets, computers, and TV)
  2. Prep For Tomorrow
  3. Tidy Up
  4. Stretch
  5. Tend To Mental Health
  6. Skin Care
  7. Go To Bed!

Essentially, each step is to prep me (and you) to the fullest extent for a kick-ass night sleep.

And, it just so happens, that I have some ride-or-die nighttime products that each step of my night routine couldn’t survive without.  To grab your affordable nighttime necessities to go along with your night routine, just keep a reading!

ESSENTIALS TO MAKE SHUTTING DOWN LESS PAINFUL

If you take anything away from this post, let it be this –

Shut down from all electronics at least 30 minutes before going to sleep (ideally you’d shut down two hours before bed).

This is so, so, so essential to getting a restful night sleep – which is obviously key to waking up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.

I use one thing to make shutting down easier:

1.  A charging station located OUTSIDE of my bedroom

This might be hard at first, so try working your way up to a 2-hour shut down period by increasing your time by 15 minutes each night.

MUST-HAVES TO MAKE PREPPING FOR MORNINGS EASIER

To make my mornings easier, I like to prep for tomorrow during my night routine.

To do this, I do two things:

1.  Prepare breakfast + lunch for tomorrow

2.  Pick out my outfit + workout clothes for tomorrow

To prepare my breakfast and lunch for the next day, I use:

Trust me, prepping for tomorrow is so worth the extra 20 minutes you’ll get to sleep in!

NO-BRAINERS FOR A QUICK TIDY-UP

The next part of my night routine?  Quick cleaning my home.

Nobody likes to wake up to a sink full of dishes or laundry that needs to be folded.

So, make it a habit each night to quickly clean your home so you can start tomorrow off on the right foot.

TOP-RATED STRETCHING NECESSITIES

My favorite part of my night time routine is the stretching portion of the evening.

Stretching is a great way to de-stress and relax, preparing your body for a deep night sleep.

You could even think about doing a night-time yoga routine or adding meditation to your stretching practice.

After tending to your body with your stretching routine, it is time to tend to your mind.

THE BEST SKIN CARE ITEMS TO LOOK FRESH COME MORNING

A night routine wouldn’t be complete without a night-time skincare routine.

A little routine inception, if you will.

I keep my night-time skincare routine simple AF, using these three skin-clearing products:

  1. Cleanse with Peppermint Castile Soap OR African Black Soap, whichever mood I’m in
  2. Tone with Mario Badescu’s facial spray in Lavender, Cucumber, or Rose Water
  3. Moisturize with Rosehip Oil

These products have been killer at keeping breakouts at bay and have my skin looking refreshed + youthful come morning.

(I use a facemask every couple of days and the Aztec Indian Healing Clay Mask is my ride-or-die.)

AMAZING PRODUCTS THAT WORK WHILE YOU SLEEP

We’ve made it to the end of our night routine!  It is finally time for bed.

I would 100% not sleep as well as I do without the following products working hard while I sleep:

In addition, to get the best nights sleep possible, make sure your bedroom is dark and cool, with noises and distractions at bay.

I sleep deep and wake rested because of these gems, so don’t miss out.

I started sticking to a nighttime routine about two years ago, and I swear, it has changed my life.

Before starting my night routine, I would wake up feeling like I just put my head on the pillow and could only think about when I’d be able to nap.

Now, I sleep soundly – which means that I wake up feeling well-rested and refreshed to take on another day.
